Why Getting the Right Harness Fit Matters
A well-fitted harness is one of the most important investments you can make for your dog's comfort and safety. Too loose and your dog can slip out; too tight and it can restrict movement, cause chafing, or even affect breathing. Getting the fit right means happier walks for both of you.
Step 1: Measure Your Dog Correctly
Before you shop, grab a soft measuring tape and take two key measurements:
- Chest girth: Measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, just behind the front legs. This is the most important measurement for harness fit.
- Neck circumference: Measure around the base of the neck, where a collar would sit.
Always measure with your dog standing naturally, and add two fingers' worth of space to ensure comfort.
Step 2: Match Your Measurements to Our Size Guide
Every harness in our dog harness collection comes with a detailed size guide. As a general rule:
- XS: Chest 30–40 cm — ideal for toy breeds like Chihuahuas and Pomeranians
- S: Chest 40–52 cm — suits Miniature Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, and Pugs
- M: Chest 52–65 cm — great for Cocker Spaniels, Whippets, and Border Collies
- L: Chest 65–80 cm — fits Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and Boxers
If your dog falls between sizes, we always recommend sizing up and adjusting the straps for a snug fit.
Step 3: Check the Fit Once It's On
Once your harness arrives, do a quick fit check before heading out:
- You should be able to slide two fingers comfortably under any strap.
- The harness should sit flat against your dog's body without twisting or bunching.
- Your dog should be able to move their legs freely without the harness riding up.
- Check that the chest plate sits in the centre of the chest, not on the throat or shoulders.
